What is Hookbase Pay As You Go?

Pay As You Go is an alternative to Hookbase's subscription plans for teams that don't want a monthly commitment. There are two modes: metered billing ($1.00 per 1,000 events, billed automatically at the end of the month) and prepaid credit packs (buy a block of events upfront, no recurring charge). Both give you the same core webhook relay platform — sources, destinations, routes, transforms, and retries.

How is metered Pay As You Go billed?

Every event you receive is metered from the very first one — there's no included allotment. Usage is tallied throughout the month and billed automatically at $1.00 per 1,000 events when your billing cycle closes. You can cancel anytime from your dashboard's Billing tab.

How do credit packs work?

Credit packs are a one-time purchase of a fixed number of events — no subscription, no recurring charge. Small (10,000 events / $10), Medium (50,000 events / $40), and Large (200,000 events / $120) are available, and larger packs work out cheaper per event. Credits are consumed oldest-first as you receive webhooks, and you can buy another pack anytime your balance runs low.

Do credit packs expire?

Yes — credits are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. If you buy multiple packs, the oldest credits are always used first, so nothing expires early just because you topped up.

Is there a monthly limit?

Both Pay As You Go modes are capped at 50,000 events per month, regardless of remaining credit balance. This keeps a traffic spike from producing a runaway bill on metered billing, and keeps prepaid usage predictable. The cap resets at the start of each calendar month; on the metered plan you can raise it by upgrading to a subscription plan, and on credit packs your remaining balance simply carries over to the next month.

Do I need a credit card to sign up?

No. Creating a Hookbase account is free and doesn't require a card. You'll only be asked for payment details when you actually enable metered billing or buy a credit pack, from your dashboard's Billing tab.

Is Pay As You Go cheaper than a subscription plan?

It depends on your volume. At $1.00 per 1,000 events, metered Pay As You Go costs more than $7 once you're sending more than about 7,000 events a month — Starter includes 25,000 events/month for a flat $7, which works out cheaper at any real, ongoing volume. Pay As You Go is the better fit for low or unpredictable volume, short-term projects, or testing production traffic before committing to a plan.

Can I switch from Pay As You Go to a subscription plan later?

Yes, anytime from the Billing tab. If you're on prepaid credits, any remaining balance carries over and keeps draining down before anything else once you're back on a usage-based plan. If you're on metered billing, upgrading just replaces the metered subscription with your chosen plan.

Pay As You Go is built for low or unpredictable volume — not as a replacement for a subscription at real, ongoing volume. At $1.00 per 1,000 events, metered billing crosses $7 once you're sending more than about 7,000 events a month. Starter includes 25,000 events/month for a flat $7, so it works out cheaper at any consistent volume above that.

Even past your included allotment, a subscription stays cheaper: Starter's overage rate is $0.50 per 1,000 events (50% less than metered Pay As You Go), Pro drops to $0.10 per 1,000 (90% less), and Business is $0.05 per 1,000 (95% less). Pay As You Go's flat $1.00/1,000 rate never gets a volume discount — a subscription's does, automatically, the moment you're over the limit.
